Amsterdam Bar Serves Up Mediterranean Fare and Hookahs in Downtown Hollywood

Since opening earlier this summer in Downtown Hollywood, Amsterdam Bar and Restaurant has become a hit with patrons who appreciate its Mediterranean and American cuisine, wide variety of hookahs, music, atmosphere and service.

Amsterdam Bar and Restaurant, which opened June 2 at 113 S. 20th Avenue, offers a full liquor bar and an extensive menu that features American fare such as the crowd-pleasing half-pound burgers, authentic Greek and Lebanese specialties, and healthy, vegetarian and high-protein selections prepared fresh from scratch on the premises.

The Amsterdam Bar and Restaurant experience, which includes DJ music, live jams and karaoke, has generated numerous 5-star online customer reviews.

“They love the food and the hookah and the prices,” said proprietor AJ Shahatit.

Hookahs are available in more than two dozen single flavors ($10), including Blueberry, Irish Cream, Mint Mocha and Pomegranate. There are a dozen basic blends ($14.99) including Ice Cream Paint Job. Fourteen Exotic Blends ($17.99) include Strawberry Margarita, and 14 Amsterdam Blends ($20.99) include Starburst Full House.

There is no charge for an additional set of coals, and the flavor can be changed for $4.99. A variety of filters can be added to the water to enhance the hookah flavor, from juices, soft drinks, milk or Red Bull ($3) to wine, beer or a shot of rum, vodka, tequila or other liquor ($4).

Through the end of September, one Amsterdam Blend hookah and either a pitcher of beer or a bucket of beer (five bottles of domestic or imported) will be offered for $19.99.

Amsterdam’s menu features appetizers ($4.99 and up) that include Veggie Grape Leaves, Baba Ganoush & Pita, Falafel, Fried Jibeneh (Greek cheese), Jalapeño Poppers, Supreme Nachos, and Wisconsin Cheddar and Bacon Fries. Soup selections ($5.99) are Traditional Chicken Noodle, Lentil Soup, New England Clam Chowder and Steak & Homestyle Noodles.

There are a dozen different salads to choose from ($4.99 to $8.99), including the Greek Shrimp Salad house special, Fattoush (a Lebanese bread salad), Tabbouleh Salad, Gyro Salad, and the Caesar Salad with optional chicken, shrimp or mahi mahi.

Burgers, sandwiches and vegetarian wraps ($5.99 to $8.99) are served with French fries or onion rings and include the Mushroom Swiss Burger, Bacon & Cheese Chicken Sandwich, Fried Greek Cheese Pocket, Gyro Wrap, Philly Cheese Steak Wrap, Shawarma Wrap, Falafel Wrap, Greek Salad Wrap, Hummus Salad Wrap, Veggie Grape Leaves Wrap and a variety of fish sandwiches.

Platters (starting at $9.99) are served with yellow rice, yogurt-cucumber salad and two sides and include kabobs, fish, chicken, shrimp sauté, gyro, shawarma and a veggie combo.

The menu includes fried chicken, coconut shrimp, and Buffalo chicken wings and shrimp. A children’s menu is available. Desserts ($4.99 to $5.99) include baklava, cheesecake and tiramisu.

After operating in Jacksonville and Daytona, Shahatit wanted to expand to the south and started researching locations.

“I did my homework and found Hollywood. Downtown has a lot of potential and there are a lot of new businesses opening,” he said. “I really like it. The local crowd is very international and tourists staying on the Beach also come Downtown. It’s a great mix of people.”

Special nights at Amsterdam Bar and Restaurant are the Live Jam All Night on Mondays and Thursdays (open jam and open mic, with drums, mics and bass player provided), Karaoke Night on Wednesdays, Hookah Fridays with DJ Daddy, Hot Saturday Mix with DJ Daddy, and Mix Night with DJ AK on Sundays.

Amsterdam Bar and Restaurant offers free WiFi, free delivery, carryout and catering services. The spacious private party room, featuring a 90-inch wall projector, can accommodate 50 guests.
